Have you ever heard of "shukubo"?
It's an accommodation operated by a temple and there are some in Kyoto.
You get to stay within or near a temple, sleep in a tatami room, share a bathroom with others, where you get to eat vegetarian meals that don't look like vegetarian, and experience a small part of monk's every day life.
Price can vary from 5,000 yet to 10,000 yen, depending on whether you take the meal package or not.
