I am going to Japan for the first time. What should I expect?

It depends on how long your stay is, but if you have just a week, visit Tokyo, Kyoto and Hiroshima. They are what's cold "golden route" where you can see most of major sightseeing spots.
However, I'd recommend visiting rural areas of Japan. In these areas you will be able to experience authentic Japan and delicious local cuisines. Participating local summer festivals are a fun thing to do. You will sure be able to intaract with locals.

What I want to say is that most Japanese do not speak English.
Unless you go to heavily tourist oriented places like, Kiyomizudera, Kinkakuji in Kyoto, Todaiji in Nara, or Central Tokyo.
Average local people would not be able to communicate in English.
