It depends on areas as Japan is a long island. Usually it is said that winter starts from november through the end of February or the beginning of March.
But for instance, Hokkaido is located in the North of Japan and winter lasts much longer than that. And Okinawa is located in the south and it is warm thoughout a year.

Also it depends on the region, but it is a cold winter from December to March roughly.
North of the region (Ex: Tohoku, Hokkaido) but when November and also in April is cold.
If you want to enjoy the snow, it is winter in the north of the region is good.
