My team has a plan to go to AOMORI for 2-3days in this Feb. I truly fall in love with Oirase Gorge when I saw the first picture about it. So amazing with Shimeikei , Makadoiwa, Kumoi and Choisi Waterfall which are frozen in winter.
Anyway, I have heard that it's difficult to find the way or transportation for coming Oirase in winter.
That's why I would like to ask locals here about the local guide and experiences to visit Oirase Gorge. Please help us to enjoy Oirase by the best way.
Thanks all with love <3
Hello! I went to Oirase Gorge in winter 2 or 3 years ago. It was one of the most magical experiences I had in my life. Trees were all white, frozen waterfalls, quiet forests... I remember every bit of it!
You can read about my experience here: https://hubjapan.io/articles/oirase-gorge-snow-hike-in-winter-was-the-most-magical-experience
As you have pointed out, it is very tough to visit Oirase Gorge in winter, even for locals. Most public transportation does not operate during winter, so you must have your own car (rent-a-car) or some kind of shuttle bus.
Unfortunately, it seems like the tour I participated in has closed down the business. At that time, there was only one other tour available, and that was by Hoshino Resort. I just checked their website, and the tour is available in 2020 February. (https://www.oirase-keiryuu.jp/en/blog/detail.php?id=36) However, you must be a guest of the hotel.
I just looked up on the internet and found this tour: https://oirase-winter.com/tour2/ They offer a bus ride from the center of Towada City, which makes it easy to take a trip. I am not sure if they have an English guide. You should ask the company directly.
I hope you can get a chance to see the beautiful forests of Oirase. Enjoy your trip :)
