Are road sign directions written in English in Japan

No, unfortunately, they are written in Japanese only.
However, many of them are without the character, but the signs only. And some of them are like internationally the same sign ( I believe...).

Thank you for the information and helpful website.One other question:are cities and town directions in Japanese and English?

On the highway, yes, the signs and directions are mostly written in Japanese and English. But signs for the general roads are very rarely written in English except for the directions. However, please do not worry about it! Through my experience, I would say that the Japanese traffic signs are understandable!
