What is Tokyo Sushi-Making Tour?
Tokyo Sushi-Making Tour is a sushi class for foreigners. They founded in 2013 October, and since then, they have taught over 4,000 participants all over the world! The class is located in Kitasenju, eastern Tokyo, which is a non-touristic district. This is also a great point about joining this class; you can become a part of Japanese everyday life by being in Kitasenju and also the class is held at the teacher’s private house.
Morris, the founder, used to work in a big Japanese corporation. But at one point, he started to think if he should continue his life being in the big corporation. He quit the job and did many unique things; like traveling around the world. During that period in his life, he took a sushi class, and it was a fateful encounter. He combined the experience about sushi class, his will to build his own company, and his English skill. He founded “Tokyo Sushi-Making Tour”, the sushi class for foreigners.
Morris’s policy is to consider each encounter with participants is precious. The number of customers was not much at first, and Morris was the only teacher, but gradually members started to join, and the number of students increased! The class is held every day now. Now over 4,000 people mainly from the U.S. and Europe joined the class until now. Their TripAdvisor page has over 150 posts from past participants. Interesting point of this class is that Japanese also join as participants. (Did you know most of us do not know how to make sushi? :O ) You may be able to coincidentally take a sushi lesson with local Japanese and make new friends.
What do we do in the sushi class?
Because of his experience in traveling around the world, his lesson does not teach only the process of making sushi. He also teaches manners and history regarding sushi so that participants can learn sushi as a part of Japanese food culture.
In 2.5 hours, participants can learn following things:
1. Let’s learn manners of sushi
2. Let’s make vinegared rice
3. Let’s make 4 types of sushi (Nigiri, Gunkan, two kinds of Decorative Maki)
4. Let’s learn the history of sushi
5. Let’s learn Japanese phrases
6. Let’s eat sushi you make
All teachers in Tokyo Sushi-Making Tour speak fluent English, and this is one of the strong points of this class. Because there is no translator, there is no difference in nuance. They can also respond quickly and accurately to the questions from the participants.
