An interesting fact about Yokohama is that, it was the birthplace of sukiyaki (gyunabe) during the 1860’s. Sukiyaki is a dish where thinly sliced pieces of meat are cooked and served in a hotpot. You can either use wagyu beef or high-quality pork as your main; then you add other ingredients to the pot depending on your preference. The most common vegetables that are added are negi (long onion in Japan), mushrooms, Chinese cabbage, and tofu.
When the meat is gone, and you still want to eat, you can add noodles to the pot to compliment the delicious soup. I’m sure you had heard about the phrase “melts in your mouth”. This also holds true for wagyu beef which is the most commonly used meat in sukiyaki. The name for this famous hotpot dish sometimes differs depending on the location. Most people refer to Kansai style hot-pot as sukiyaki and gyu-nabe for Kanto style.
In order to fully experience the delicious taste of sukiyaki, visit these 10 restaurants in Yokohama and judge it for yourself.
