Christmas is widely celebrated as an event for romantic couples in Japan. Therefore, the city of Tokyo is filled with beautiful Christmas lights (it’s commonly called “illumination” in Japanese) everywhere from November to December, people walk around downtown to see those Christmas lights, and spend romantic time with their loved ones. In this article, I will introduce major places to see beautiful Christmas Lights.

1. Marunouchi Illumiation, Marunouchi (near Tokyo station)

Marunouchi is a district near Tokyo station and Imperial Palace where lots of fancy shops and office buildings are located. Lots of financial companies are located here like, and it’s like the Wall street in New York City. The Christmas lights are on 200 trees along the 1.2 km Naka-dori street which connects Yurakucho and Otemachi, with 1 million LED lights in the champagne gold color.

2. Tokyo Michiterasu, Tokyo station

This is an event to light up Tokyo station. It’s only from 21 Dec to 28 Dec, but it’s worth to see the historical Tokyo station being lighten up beautifully.

3. White Christmas Tree in KITTE, near Tokyo station

KITTE is a shopping center located right across Tokyo station. Their White Christmas tree is in the center of the building and the size of this tree is 14.5m which is really huge. There will be a show in every 30 min from 5:10 p.m. to 10:40 p.m. The show plays music and the lights sparkle as if snows are falling down in the building.

4. Caretta Illumination, Shiodome

Caretta Shiodome is a shopping center near Shinbashi. The B2 floor area will be lighten up with 270,000 blue lights. There are also 6 minutes show in every 20 minutes, which changes the colors of lights and plays music.

5. Roppongi Hills, Roppongi

Roppongi Hills is a shopping center and office building in Roppongi. The area is huge and there are several places where Christmas events are held.

6. Tokyo Midtown, Roppongi

Tokyo Midtown is located near Roppongi Hills. They have a 2,000㎡ grass garden and there will be filled with 180,000 lights. The light moves and changes colors as if you are looking stars in space.

7. Omotesando Street

Omotesando is name of the street near Harajuku. The street is going to be filled with 500,000 golden color of lights. It’s also beautiful to see from taxi or car driving down the street.

8. Ao-no-Dokutsu (Blue Cave) in Shibuya

Ao-no-Dokutsu in Shibuya decorates approximately 800 meters street from the Japanese zelkova tree lane in Yoyogi Park to Shibuya Koen-Dori Street. 600,000 blue LED lights create a magical atmosphere with various styles of lighting.
